Redevelopment and placemaking project in Bolton gets planning approval
15/07/20
We are delighted that the incredible plans for the re-development of Crompton Place, Bolton Victoria Square have now been granted planning permission. The £250 million scheme is a key part of the £1.5 billion Bolton Town Centre Masterplan and as such, is strategically important for the town centre. The full press release can be viewed here.
Town centres have suffered in recent years from a decline in footfall and these challenges have been compounded by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Back in November, we were proud to work closely with Bolton Regeneration Ltd, formed by BCGEI and Midas to facilitate the public consultation. Showcasing the vision and sharing the plans for change we were able to involve the people and businesses of Bolton to have their say and help shape the future of this important location. Mixed-use, multi-purpose space is replacing a blanket retail approach and with the ’new normal’ that has resulted from Covid-19, innovative ways to share space and re-evaluate the value of town centre space can evolve as a result. Placemaking in the new age is about enticing people to enjoy a re-invigorated destination that they can be proud of. Find out more about Placemaking here.
The public realm, with a focus on a safe, enjoyable pedestrianised environment is very much as the heart of this project. The mixed-use scheme includes a 110-bedroom hotel, 150 homes, 10,500m² of office space, and mixed-use retail, leisure, dining and events space (dubbed “Bolton Works”) designed to accommodate independent retailers and food operators and also includes incubator space for small business start-ups. Social, economic and environmental sustainability is central to the scheme, achieved through the complementary mix of uses, choice of materials, soft landscaping, green roof terraces and rainwater collection, as well as a centralised energy centre, natural ventilation and solar collection.
We are delighted that this scheme has been given the green light to start, and are excited to see it evolve and develop over the coming months.
