As graduation dates start looming for the next batch of designers we thought it was a good opportunity to share a few tips on the do’s and don’ts of approaching a design agency.
You might be interested in a placement, freelance work or even a permanent job. Whatever your plan, here are a few basic rules to help you on your way…
Stand out from the crowd
How are you planning to get our attention? You’re a creative after all, agencies have lots of people approaching them on a daily basis. In order to get noticed you need to go the extra mile. A generic dear sir/madam email won’t cut the mustard! You might be surprised as to how many ‘design’ CV’s are done in word and look anything but creative. Your CV might only get a cursory glance so make it jump out at the viewer.
Tone of voice
Enthusiasm and positivity can go a long way, and an upbeat attitude can make or break whether any one replies to you. What you lack in experience can be made up by your passion.
Compliments can go a long way
Agencies are a vain bunch! They love to hear a few compliments from time to time. It’s a good way of not only getting on our good side but also a perfect opportunity to show that you have taken the time to look at and consider specific projects.
The proof is in the pudding
We have read your CV and we know how much you love design, we love your enthusiasm, now it’s time to show us what you are made of.
Why not send a link to your online portfolio or a PDF with a couple of your best projects? Make sure that what you send is relevant to the company you are approaching. Don’t send over website layouts to an advertising agency. It may be your favourite project but it isn’t relevant. Quality is always better than quantity, pick projects which showcase your talents.
